GENERAL COUNSEL

Savvii Group Inc. is searching for an in-house General Counsel. The General Counsel is responsible for providing strategic legal advice on corporate and regulatory issues to support our organization to carry out its mission in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and at acceptable levels of risk. The General Counsel is expected to be involved in a wide range of related activities, including but not limited to supporting marketing, assisting in the negotiation and finalization of commercial contracts, privacy, consumer protection, terms and conditions, regulatory and compliance related engagements, security and management of data, intellectual property and corporate liability related matters (including insurance and indemnity coverage). The General Counsel reports to the CEO.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Provide advice to all levels of management regarding legal and business issues, and in particular, support the Leadership team on any legal and regulatory matters
  • Review and work with external parties such as regulators and external counsels and respond to regulatory, government and audit requests.
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal laws and regulations including the management of corporate registrations and annual filings and licenses
  • Advise and report on trends and issues in the Canadian fintech, payments, banking and securities industry including new legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Research, identify and consult on legal risks in connection with the development of new products, and create legal structures to mitigate them
  • Oversee and manage all external counsel relationships (as required)
  • Lead final stage vendor contract review to ensure terms are clear and risks mitigated

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide ongoing strategic legal advice on corporate and fintech regulatory issues to support the organization in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and at acceptable levels of risk.
  • Be involved in a wide range of related activities, including but not limited to marketing, assisting in the negotiation and finalization of commercial and vendor contracts, privacy, consumer protection, regulatory and compliance-related engagements, security and management of data, intellectual property and corporate liability related matters (including insurance and indemnity coverage).
  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal laws and regulations including the management of corporate registrations and annual filings and licenses.

  • You are able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the Canadian payments regulatory landscape, privacy and disclosure law, and other legal areas related to a Fintech start-up
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent academic and law firm credentials
  • Hold a current practicing certificate
  • 10+ years of relevant law firm, financial, fintech, government or in-house legal department work experience
